The Hidden Skill Behind Every Successful Parent

#sensorysmartot #theregulationhourglass parent blog Jul 22, 2026

When we think about successful parenting, we often imagine parents who always seem to know the right thing to say.

The right consequence.

The perfect strategy.

The ideal bedtime routine.

But after more than 30 years as a paediatric occupational therapist, I've come to believe that the most successful parents share something quite different.

It isn't that they have all the answers.

It's that they know how to observe before they respond.

Parenting Isn't About Having More Strategies

Parents often ask me:

"What's the best strategy?"

My answer is usually another question.

"Tell me what's happening just before your child struggles."

Because no strategy works all the time.

Children change.

Their environments change.

Their emotions change.

Their regulation changes.

The most effective parents don't immediately reach for a reward chart, a consequence or another parenting technique.

They pause.

They become curious.

They ask themselves:

  • What is my child communicating?

  • What might their nervous system need right now?

  • Is this a teaching moment or a co-regulation moment?

Those questions often change everything.

Looking Beyond Behaviour

Behaviour is easy to see.

Regulation isn't.

Two children may refuse the same task for completely different reasons.

One may be anxious.

Another may be overwhelmed by sensory information.

Another may simply be exhausted.

Responding to behaviour alone means we often miss the reason behind it.

Responding to regulation helps us support the child who is actually in front of us.

Small Changes Make a Big Difference

Sometimes success isn't doing more.

It's doing something differently.

Speaking more slowly.

Reducing demands.

Giving processing time.

Offering connection before correction.

Stepping in when your child needs you.

Stepping back when they're ready.

These small adjustments often create the biggest changes because they match support to your child's capacity rather than expecting your child to match the situation.

The Hidden Skill

The hidden skill isn't having all the answers.

It's developing the ability to notice.

To pause.

To understand.

And then to choose your response intentionally.

That skill grows over time.

Every time you become curious before becoming corrective, you're strengthening it.

Parenting has never been about perfection.

It's about learning to respond to the child in front of you today—not the one you expected yesterday.
